Daniel Benjamin Wheeler will join a panel at the Mental Health in Journalism Summit 2025, taking place online from October 8–10, 2025. Organised by The Self-Investigation and co-funded by the Fred Foundation, the summit brings together journalists, editors, and mental health experts from across the globe to explore practical ways to improve well-being in the media industry.
Now in its second year, the summit will focus on the theme Resilience for uncertain times and feature a three-day programme of panel discussions, case studies, and workshops. The event will offer one full day of sessions in Spanish (October 8), followed by two days in English (October 9–10). The goal is to provide media professionals with the knowledge, skills, and support networks needed to address the growing mental health challenges in journalism.
On Thursday, 9 October (14:00–14:50 CEST), Wheeler will join the panel Bearing witness, protecting self: Trauma-aware journalism in the face of tragedy. The session will examine the ethical and emotional complexities journalists encounter when reporting on war, mass suffering, and humanitarian crises. Topics will include trauma-informed storytelling practices, strategies for protecting both sources and journalists, and approaches to handling sensitive interviews in ethically challenging environments.
Wheeler will be joined by moderator Juliana Ruhfus, investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker, as well as panellists Lisa Krantz, visual journalist and assistant professor at the University of Montana, and Yulia Surkova, a Ukrainian journalist covering military operations and humanitarian issues for AFP and the United Nations.
